Wally Learns about Rugby League & Cheerleading

I was lucky enough to take Wally to a game of Rugby League. In Rugby League you can tackle the players who have the ball in the other team, throw, kick & catch the oval shaped ball as well as kick for goal. In junior games, the more people who pass and catch the ball when a try is scored means you get more points. I don't think you play Rugby League in America. What sort of football do you play?

Wally has also had the chance to go to a cheerleading competition and also a Port City Power basketball game. When he went to the competition, Wally got to wear our school cheer top! Our school team came first in the Primary School section of the competition and we also won the Junior display section when we did our skipping performance. Does your school do cheerleading? Wally was able to go out on to the court when we were cheering for the Woman's Queensland Basketball League team - POWER.

Out & About Gladstone

Since Wally arrived in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia, he has not had time to stand still!
His first tour was out & about in the local area.
He first visited the Gladstone Art Gallery where he bumped into a statue of Mr Gladstone - our city's namesake.
His next stop was our beautiful marina, where he looked at some very large (and expensive) boats and dreamed about going out to wonderful Heron Island - a coral cay island about 2 hours by water from Gladstone. Heron Island has the most beautiful marine life around it. While at the marina, Wally met some new friends at the Gladstone Area Promotions Bureau.
The next stop was the Gladstone Exercise Park. Wally had some difficulties here as his legs were a little short for most of the equipment!
Next was the Tondoon Botanical Gardens. Wally loved all the massive Eucalyptus (Gum) trees and had a bit of a fright when a scrub turkey tried to run off with him. As well as the naughty srub turkey, Wally met up with some duck & some turtles. Can you see the turtles in the water with the ducks?
Wally then took some time to visit the Educational Experience at the Gardens - checking out the art activities & Question Tree.

Wally has left us now - hope he arrives safely back home before you all go on Summer break. Next week we go on our Winter break - only for 2 weeks. Our summer break is in December & January and it is 6 weeks (YIPPEE!). How long do you get for your break?
Wally is travelling with a couple of friends that he met over here - I hope they like thier new home in Pensylvania.
We have loved having Wally - it was so much fun taking him to different places & seeing so many things around our home.
I hope that you keep coming back to the blog because we are still editing photos & video footage that we can share with you all

Wally is leaning at lot about sports at Gladstone Central. Everyday each class goes out for 30mins to take part in Smart Moves - physical activity which involves huff and puff and skill learning. As we are now coming into winter in Australia our sports have changed a little. We play netball (like basketball but you can't bounce the ball), rugby league, basketball, Australian rules football and soccer. June is a big Track and Field month with our Sports Day being held very soon. In the summer months (November - January), our sports includes lots of swimming activities, cricket, basketball and volleyball. We also love to skip at Gladstone Central and have a pretty cool skipping demonstration team - video on the way!

Sorry there hasn't been a post since arriving in Australia - Wally has been so busy. This is just a quick post to let everyone know that Wally is safe & visiting so many places - heaps of pictures & video footage will be posted within the next couple of days.
Wally has visited the marina, the harbour, the local botanical gardens (where he was chased by a scrub turkey who really liked him), the Gladstone Information & Tourist Centre and local Gladstone landmarks.
Wally has also gone along to a Rugby League game and basketball. His favourite event so far has been a cheerleading competition where the Gladstone Central State School won the primary school division - he even had his photo taken with the trophies.

Well Wally has finally arrived Down Under (Australia). Gladstone Central State School is in a State called Queensland. Gladstone is situated at the southern end of The Great Barrier Reef on the east coast of Queensland. During Wally's visit here we hope to show you around our wonderful school and town. Wally's first day in Australia was very busy - he got to meet all of the year 4/5 students, met lots of native Australian animals & birds and joined in with the students for Track & Field training. A very exhausting day!!
It is nearly Winter here, so we are getting cold mornings here - not as cold as the weather you have for your Winter. It never snows here & gets extremely hot during the Summer months of December & January.
Our school colours are sky blue & maroon. What are your school colours?

The Tour of our famous sports arenas

Just before Wally left he went home with one of our students. Emma and family took Wally to four important places in our Springfield & Eugene city communities. Here is his tour of the Springfield City Library and 3 sports facilities at the University of Oregon, home of the Ducks!

Wally Leaves for Australia

On Monday of this week, Wally was sent to Australia. He was packaged off at the United States Postal Service. We sadly had to say goodbye. He had an interesting 2 weeks with us, though. Wally went on a 5 mile bicycle ride along the Willamette River, toured the University of Oregon (go Ducks!) on a bike and with some students. Wally shipped out on Monday, May 3rd and should be in Australia as of today! Happy travels!

A Day with Wally

Our 4th grade class was visited by Wally earlier this week. We were happy to host Wally for a day during his stay with the 3rd graders in Mrs. LaMar's class at Riverbend Elementary School in Springfield, Oregon.

Yes, Wally was grabbed by a snake today. He did not want to go on stage, but he was dragged up by a student who didn't mind snakes. He learned that the snake was not poisonous and was safe to hold at the assembly.

Do you see Wally shaking? This snake is a king snake. It eats rattle snakes and other reptiles.

Wally joins us at the Spring Sing

Last night Wally was at the concert. It was the Spring Sing were all of the 2nd and 3rd graders sang for the parents.

If you look closely you will see Wally next to Ms. Danzinger, our music teacher. She is playing the guitar. Wally is on the metal table next to the sound equipment.

Wally is a pretty good singer. He kept cracking up and making us laugh.

Meeting our stuffed animals

Wally met our stuffed animals. He made new friends right away.

We brought our stuffed animals to school today so we could welcome Wally. It was kind of wild at first, then the stuffed animals all calmed down.

Wally then went right to the computer to look at the blog. He asked the teacher to type because his feet were too big for the keys.

Westward Ho! Oregon or Bust!

We are really sorry to see Wally leave Nebraska! It is has been a great week sharing with Wally a lot of the things that make Nebraska a great place to live. Our Dodge 4th graders thought it fitting that Wally travel to Oregon in style. Like Wally, thousands of people traveled across Nebraska following the Oregon Trail during the mid to late 1800s. The Oregon Trail was a 2,000 mile journey that followed the Platte River through Nebraska. Most people traveled in a covered wagon which held all their belongings. The wagon would usually be pulled by oxen, but sometimes mules were used. Most people left from Independence, Missouri in the early spring in the hopes that the 6 month journey would have them crossing the Rocky Mountains and getting to Oregon before winter.

The trip was difficult, disease, bad food, no food, mosquitoes, fire, accidental shootings, poisoning, and deaths were just a few of the hardships these pioneers faced as they traveled. So many wagons made the journey that today almost 300 miles of wagon ruts still can be seen.

Wally's trip to Oregon will be a lot shorter than the pioneers but he follows in the footsteps of thousands of pioneers who helped make this country great! So Long Wally!

The Tooth Fairy Visits Wally

After Wally's accident at Pier Park, Wally was visited by the Islander Tooth Fairy. Wally really doesn't need cash, so the Tooth Fairy brought him a new t-shirt to wear to remember his time in Grand Island, Nebraska, home of the Islanders!

Wally Loses a Tooth!

UH-OH! Wally lost his tooth! Today, while playing on the slide at Pier Park (which is across the street from Dodge Elementary School) he chose to break the rules. Instead of sliding feet first, he thought he’d try head first! Guess what happened?

On the way down the slide (head first) he somehow caught one of his teeth inside the slide. We heard a loud “RRRRAH!”. Once he got to the bottom, he went face first into the dirt. We ran over to see if he was o.k. When he lifted his head, his mouth dropped opened. Right away we noticed a huge gap where a tooth once was. Seconds later, that gigantic tooth came sliding down the slide after him. Lucky for Wally, wooly mammoths grow six sets of teeth in their lifetimes.

Wally learned a valuable lesson about following rules. Within minutes, he hopped back to his feet, and headed back to try the slide again. But after that, each time he slid down...he was smart and went feet first!

Wally Goes Tourist - Statewide

Wally also had a chance to visit (virtually) a couple really interesting places in Nebraska that are an important part of our state's history. Chimney Rock in western Nebraska was an important landmark for pioneers who traveled along the Oregon Trail through Nebraska. It gets it's name because it looks like a chimney. It used to be about 100 feet higher then it is today, but erosion and lightning strikes have shortened it. What makes it stand out is that most of Nebraska is pretty flat.

Another cool place to visit is Ashfall Fossil Beds in Northeastern Nebraska. Wally felt right at home here. Thousands of years ago, when Nebraska was a tropical rainforest, a really big volcano exploded in what now is the state of Idaho. A huge cloud of ash blew across the land. Animals who were drinking at a water hole died when the ash fell on them and they breathed it in. They were buried under many feet of ash. The ash was covered by dirt and sand. One day only a few years ago, a farmer found a bone in his field. It turned out to be a bone from a rhino. When archelogists started digging they found fossils of rhinos, prehistoric horses, zebras,bison, and cranes. They are still digging and finding more fossils.

Wally Goes Tourist - Local

Since Dodge Elementary dismisses at 2:00 on Wednesdays, Wally had some time to be a tourist around the city of Grand Island. First Wally visited Tornado Hill. In 1980, seven tornadoes, one an F4, touched down in the Grand Island. They did a lot of damage. Dodge Elementary even had some damage. The story Night of the Twisters by Ivy Ruckman was written about this event in Grand Island's history. Debris that could not be recycled was burned and buried in a park. The base of the hill was a hole 6-8 feet deep and nearly 200 feet across, and the hill is 40 feet high. Since Grand Island is prairie flat land, Tornado Hill is a great place to go sledding in the winter.

Wally made a second stop at Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. It is a living history museum so there are displays for people to see. You can also go to the Railroad Town and see how things were done in pioneer days. Every year we take a field trip to a different part of the town - the Native American earthlodge, a pioneer home, the farm, and this year we visited the schoolhouse. We pretended that we were students at a prairie school in 1888. Wally didn't think he would like using a privy (outhouse).

Wally gets a history lesson

Dodge Elementary is named after Grenville Dodge. Grenville Dodge was born in 1831 and died in 1916. He was famous for his work with railroads. First, he was a Major General in the Civil War and led troops in surveying and constructing railroads. These railroads helped the troops get to the front line and win battles. Later, from 1866 to 1870, he was the engineer and driving force in building the Union Pacific Railway. This railway runs through our hometown of Grand Island, Nebraska.

Wally gets back to nature

An educator from Rowe Sanctuary came to talk to Miss Crowe’s class about the Sandhill Cranes and other birds in Nebraska. Some interesting things that Wally and the other students learned were that there is a cool looking bird thats eats JELLY! The bird’s name is Baltimore Oriole. Did you know that all birds don’t lay their eggs at the same time? The Blue Jay can incubate their eggs for 16 to 18 days.

A sandhill crane eats a lot of corn while it is here in Nebraska. Their wing span can be 6 ft. and they can lay about 2 eggs. They eat insects, fruit, worms, plants, amphibians. Wally was so interested in the Sandhill Cranes he took a trip out to Rowe Sanctuary to see for himself.

Miss Crowe got him a pin and put him to work.

He worked in the gift shop and in the education center for a while.

He learned how to use a spotting scope and tested out the camouflage.

Wally went out on the trail and to the blind.

He walked out on a sandbar in the Platte and then took a nap in the flowers.

The Sandhill Crane is the only animal in Nebraska that was also living here during the time of the Mammoth. Do you have an animal in your state that has been around that long?

Visit to Nebraska's State Capitol

Wally was disappointed that the weather delays caused him to miss the chance to see one of the architectural wonders of the world - Nebraska's State Capitol building - so he sent his cousin, Wilhemina, in his place. She was delighted to make the journey with the Dodge Fourth Graders on April 8th. She found out that the Capitol is very pretty. It is full of sculptures and mosaics. The building is actually the third Capitol building. The first building crumbled apart and the second building sank. The architect of this building, Betram Goodhue, designed the building to last a thousand years. After the Capitol we ate lunch at the University of Nebraska's Student Union. Wilhemina was most excited about our next stop, Morrill Hall. She saw many of her relatives there. Archy is the most famous. He is the largest mammoth fossil ever discovered. Wilhemina is very proud of the fact that Archy is Nebraska's state fossil. What is your state fossil? By the time the buses came to take us home, Wilhemina was so tired she slept on the way home, missing the movie "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". Wally really liked the movie we made about our trip. Check it Out... He would also like to know if your state capitol building has an interesting history.

Sea World in San Antonio

San Antonio has an educational marine life adventure park called Sea World. Wally loved Sea World because there are live animal shows, animal exhibits, thrill rides, and a water park. Sea World has killer whales, seals, walrus, dolphins, and more. There are also roller coaster rides like the steel eel and water rides as well. There is also a beach park to relax with timed water waves or slide down the water slide. It's a great place for kids and grown ups! Do you have amusement parks ? What is your favorite ride or show?

The San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio Riverwalk is also called the Paseo Del Rio. In the beginning, Spanish Explorers used the waterway to supply water to the missions. The Alamo was one of the missions to first benefit. It is 2 1/2 miles long and a big tourist attraction in Texas. There are many fun things to do at the Riverwalk. There are many different kinds of restaurants ..... Mexican, Italian, Texas Bar-B-Que, and more. At the Riverwalk you can also go shopping there are artisan shops along with a Rivercenter Mall. The Riverwalk also has festivities such as, the Christmas boat parade, Fiesta, and other cultural events. So, you see the Riverwalk is the place to be if you want to have fun. Wally will have a great time taking a boat ride and enjoying the food. What tourist attraction do you have in your state or country?

San Antonio Custom and Celebration

Easter recently happened and Wally got to experience a "cascarone" being broken on his head. Cascarones are empty egg shells filled with confetti. Cascarones originally came from Asia and were filled with perfumed powder. The eggs were used to bring good luck when broken upon someone's head. The cascarones were then brought to Italy by Marco Polo. The cascarone eventually made it's way to Spain and then Mexico by the Emperor Maximillan's wife. The cascarones were then filled with confetti instead of powder. In San Antonio, cascarones are used during Easter and when "Fiesta" week is celebrated. "Fiesta" is a huge 11 day festival celebration. It is a way to honor the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto. Wally got a cascarone broken on his head while wearing his Fiesta hat. What kind of customs or celebrations do you have in your state or country?

San Antonio Rodeos

Texas is well known for rodeos. Wally was able to visit a local rodeo company called Tejas Rodeo.

Tejas Rodeo is about 2 1/2 miles north of our school in Bulverde, Texas. There is live country music, barrel racing, teamroping, and bull riding. The Pro-rodeos are March through November on Fridays and Saturdays. Friday also has a popular steak night. The food is very yummy. San Antonio also has a larger rodeo every year. It is the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. It takes place every year in February. There are live concerts with big name country singers, livestock shows, and Pro-rodeo competitions. Wally enjoyed being a cowboy. Do you have rodeos where you live?

The Japanese Tea Garden is also known as the Sunken Gardens.

The artist of the entrance was born in Mexico 1891 and died the year of 1955. His name was Dionicio Rodriguez. It is a well-known, historical landmark and very fun for weekend trips. They have extraordinary flowers, plants, waterfalls, and more! Walking around and exploring the neat trails is fun for everyone in the family especially the parents because it is free to get in. Just remember to bring your camera. Do you have a special historical garden in your city?

Spring in San Antonio with our State Flowers

Bluebonnets are one of the most important wildflowers in Texas. They are the state flower.

They can be found along the roadside and it is typically a tradition to take pictures with them when in full bloom. They got their name because the petals resemble a woman's sunbonnet. The bluebonnets are also called buffalo clover. I enjoy them and apparently so did Wally. What is your state flower?

I want to be "somebody" in my country

Dear Wally:
When I think about Mexico, I think of course in beaches, food and lovely and nice people. My family and me lived 5 years in USA and it was really hard because of what we left. What we missed the most were, family, friends and all that we have with them like our traditions and food. The most I think about my country, the most I love it. Unfortunately we're having some problems, well, not just "some", we have a lot of problems with drug gangs and you just are listening about all the people that are murder by these gangs and I'm always thinking that this is not "The Mexico" that my parents are proud of.
I love my country and I'm trying to study because I want to do my best for my country.

Mammoth fossils in Mexico

Wally, my name is Sofía. Let me tell you that in half of 20th century were founded fossils in some little towns around Mexico city, all those were just a few meters underground. Now, the most important skeleton is in a permanent exhibition at the same place were it was founded.
Some of the greatest scientists have been here in Mexico to analyze and understand the age and the origin of the bones. The Mexican scientists think the mammoths lived in Mexico 11,000 years ago around the Lake of Texcoco. It was located near to an active volcano and the scientists believe, they were hunted by humans, it cause the mammoths extinction.

My name is Andrea and I want that Wally tastes our delicious food. Mexico is an exciting place to visit, there are many things to do and see for tourists. There are theaters, museums, restaurants, night clubs... everything!
The mexican food is delicious, we have a lot of food examples; chiles, tortillas, maiz, adobo, sopes, quesadillas, pozole, tamales. If you visit my country I suggest to eat: tipic recipies of mayas, tarahumaras, mexicas, mole, pozole and quesadillas. There isn't food like Mexican.

Teotihuacan

Hello! My name is Estrella and I want to tell you that Teotihuacan means the place where gods were created and it's a big archaeological place located in the state of Mexico.
Wally and me went there with my parents. We walked through the avenue of the Dead which is the principal avenue in Teotihuacan. There are two important pyramids: " The pyramid of the Sun" which is the highest pyramid in Mesoamerica North Maya and "The pyramid of the moon" which is known for its beauty, it's about 116 feet high and faces south with a view of the city. In front of this pyramid is the Plaza of the moon. Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the world and is known for craft activities, water god called Tlaloc and Quetzalcoatl. The ancestors created a beautiful calendar and they are known by their knowledge about astronomy and herbal medicine. Today Teotihuacan is one of the most noted archaeological attractions in Mexico. I hope Wally had lots of fun with me and my family.

I'm Sacra from room 44 at Centro Escolar del Lago and last weekend I show Wally a little bite of my beautiful country. First Wally arrived to my home and I told him "Mi casa es tu casa" meaning: My home is your home or I want that you feel happy and confortable as in your own home, then we planned our trip because my parents offered me to take Wally just in one day to see and take photos of Prehispanic, Colonial and Modern Mexico. And then the great adventure!!

Mexico is a modern country with a great history!

My family and I took Wally to meet his Mexican Ancestors. Mexico has thousands of Mammoth's remains. Not many people know that Mexico is called "The Land of Walking Mammoths". Mr Celso Ramirez needs help to support a little museum of Mammoths.

Aztec ruins represent Mexico's Prehispanic history. Wally visited "The Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacán".

Wally, I'm Isa and I want to introduce you my sisters. We live with our parents in the metropolitan zone of the great city of Mexico, where there are thousand of things to make and interesting places to visit. But today I want to talk about the southwest of my country.

The past summer I went with my family to Oaxaca, a fantastic! state of our country. The culture Zapoteca and Mixteca settled down in this zone, we visited Monte Albán where there are several pyramids surrounded by gardens. In the coast of Oaxaca there are pretty beaches like "Zicatela" and Puerto Escondido. We saw a market full of food, textiles and crafts. Finally we went to the town of Santa Catarina where is a very miraculous Virgin. I enjoyed a lot my trip to Oaxaca.

Hello! Wally I feel very happy having you with me and my family. My name is Alexa and I want to show you where is located my home. I live in Tepotzotlan which is part of the state of Mexico. The name of the city has nahuatl origin and means “among humpbacks” referring to the shape of the hills that surround this area. It is located 44.5 km from Mexico city and from 10 minutes to my school.

The main attraction is the Museum National of the Virreynato in which is the Jesuit school of San Martin and San Francisco Javier and the Temple of San Peter Apostle. At the moment it has elevated to the category of Magical Town of Mexico. The center of town has maintained its colonial appearance with plazas, gardens, etc. There is a small secular plaza in front of the main church which contains a Kiosk at which many cultural events take place. The municipal market stands selling traditional dishes as quesadillas, sopes, pambazos and tacos as well as barbacoa and carnitas.

This is my town, a colorful and beautiful town. Hey! Children and teachers of everywhere Do you like my town?

Wally spent several snowy weeks in Roanoke, Virginia. While here, he visited with school children and learned about our area.

Gabe and Wally visited the Taubman Art Museum during his stay. Here's what Wally had to say about this unique building:

Hi! I’m Wally! My friend, Gabe, took me on an adventure today. I went downtown Roanoke, Virginia, and I had a blast! He took me to the Taubman Art Museum. It was closed, so we could not go inside, but we walked the grounds. The architecture was amazing! It contains lots of weird shapes in all sizes. It looks like something from Star Wars! On the way back to the car, we walked past many stores and restaurants. Many delicious smells filled the air.

Hi! I'm Wally. Today, February 18, 2010, I spent the day with a new friend, Bryce. He and his family treated me to a wonderful meal at a restaraunt called The Roanoker. The have the BEST Pancakes and their biscuits are out of this world! I'm very glad I got to meet a new friend in Roanoke, good thing I wore my thick fur, as you can tell by the snow on the ground-it was COLD!

We chose to go to the fire station because it was a very interesting place to go and the fire trucks were big compared to Wally. Also the firemen were not in their uniforms. They were in their in t-shrits and shorts because they were working out when I and Wally got there. Plus the fire station was a small one. We met a fire man named John.He was nice enough to let us take a picture in front or standing on it. As Wally and I was leaving more firemen in t-shirts and shorts were walking along the fire trucks. I said hi to all of them and they said hi back to Wally and I. Wally said hi too. Then Wally and I went to the car and drove back home.

Hello everybody! I have had so much fun visiting with Mrs. Bond's class (she has been out due to a family emergency, but the substitute tried to keep me entertained). Today we learned about the food chain....MY food chain!!! We researched what the mammoth might have eaten and what predators might have preyed upon me. The theory that we read about stated that I ate plants, roots and herbs. Early humans were most likely my main predator, but I probably became extinct because of the Ice Age's impact on plant life. Here is a picture of me eating a plant, and a human trying to come after me with a spear-like weapon.

Wally arrived in Edenton, NC yesterday, but it was a teacher workday. Mrs. Bond decided to give him a tour of Edenton. Edenton is a very historic town. Mrs. Bond took Wally to the Barker House where the historic Edenton Tea Party occurred. Wally took a picture on the cannon used by the Edenton Bell Battery...

the cannon was made from the bells that were taken from various buildings in Edenton and then melted down to construct the cannon. Wally will be attending Mrs. Bond's 5th grade class and we are looking forward to some exciting events, including a visit from an author!

Well after that trip over the bridge my friend and I came to the big Wachovia Center and took are seats , even know the Sixers lost I was still the happiest Woolly Mammoth in the world .

Dec.21 Hi kids Wally here. Today my friend and I went out in the snow when I asked “How much snow do you get a year here in Philadelphia?” “Good question Wally.” Said my friend “We get about 1 inch of snow a year.” “But this year is special I heard on the news we haven’t gotten this much snow in a century!” Then my friend and I went inside and as soon as I saw the nativity set I asked. “What’s that?” He told me and explained that Pennsylvania was one of the first places to have religious freedom because of William Penn's Holy Experiment. He thought that people should be able to practice their own religions and that people were all equal. This later became part of the US Constitution.
We went upstairs to catch the Eagles game. I loved it. My friend also told me “The Eagles travel all over the U.S.A. and are the Philadelphia football team. They’ve been playing since 1933 except the 1943 season when the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers joined forces to make the Philadelphia - Pittsburgh Stegles By the time the game was over it was time to go to bed.

Lights camera action! Wally in the house! Welcome to my blog. so I need to tell you about January 4th 2010. Am I right? Ok so Grace took me home and we both learned a lot. We also had a lot of fun.

One fun and educational thing we did was we leaned that there are other kinds of mammals in P.A. And that a lot of kids and adults have pets like cats, dogs, and guinea pigs. Ok now I am on a roll!

Oh I almost forgot to tell you about Walter E. Diemer. That person is problem one of Grace's favorite role models because he invented Bubble Gum and also even though it was Walter E. Diemer's invention he did not receive any royalties (money), and he even did not care about it. He was just happy that he invented Bubble Gum.
He also invited kids to his house to tell them about his accidental invention ( Bubble Gum). One more fun fact about Walter E. Diemer is that he was born and he died in P.A. just like Grace!
Now that I learned these things I am very happy to learn more about PA. Well that’s how I feel now. I am trying to learn more about different places and about other things.

Wally's Day With Fiona

I went home with Fiona on December 22nd. There had to be something that she would be able to teach me about Pennsylvania on that day. Her argument was she would teach me about when the German, Austrian and Swiss settlers came from Europe to Pennsylvania in 1610 and brought their countries foods and later on the different foods became an industry to Pennsylvania. One of those foods were pretzels. Some companies in Pennsylvania that make snack foods are Snyders and Herrs. She taught me that the first commercial pretzel bakery was founded in Pennsylvania by Tom Stergus. I thought that the fact that the first pretzel bakery was founded in Pennsylvania was pretty cool. Fiona and I also walked her dog showing me the landscape and people of Pennsylvania. There were a lot of dips and hills and plants and trees and the climate was pretty cold since I was there in the winter. All though I’ve heard it’s really hot in the summer. The people were nice too. I had a great time at Fiona’s state and I can’t wait to see yours as well! While you're waiting for me to arrive at your school ,think what can you teach me about your state? Please respond!

Hey kids! I (Wally) stayed with some of my classmates on December 30-31. I had a blast! We went to the ice-skating rink.
I had SO much fun ice-skating. It reminded me being back on the ice. Even though I got wet, they told me that I skated beautifully.

When we got home, my host zoomed right to her sister’s bookshelf and grabbed 3 different books about Ben Franklin. She let me choose which book I wanted to read first. After that, I took a mini quiz on the back of the book. Guess how I did! I got 100%! She was so proud of me. I guess I am a Ben Franklin expert.

I learned that Ben Franklin convinced France to be in the war with America so they could defeat England and be a free country. Ben Franklin also started the first library so everybody could take books and read. Did you even know that there’s a museum called the Franklin Institute all about his phenomenal inventions? If you haven’t, I totally recommend it. Hey! Guess what? He even was one of our founding fathers! Ben’s a cool dude. He would so be a best friend of mine.

My Experience On Dec. 17, 09

Hi! Wally here. I went home with a friend on Dec. 17th. We went to get a Christmas tree at St. Margaret Church. I had loads of fun. On the way there I saw, the town of Narberth, the church and a long row of Christmas trees. She told me about how William Penn got granted land here in Pennsylvania. He felt that it wasn’t fair everyone had to practice the king of England’s religion so he started the holy experiment. William Penn let everyone who came to Pennsylvania practice his or her own religion. Cool right?
Now I have to ask you something; Do you know about any body in your state who made as big of an impact as William Penn? If so tell me when I come to your school!

Katie and I went to the Philadelphia Nutcracker ballet. When her mom drove there we passed the town hall, the Delaware and Schuylkill river then Katie told me that the Delaware and Schuylkill river are natural resources, and recreation. Today, 1/10/10, I went to a friend’s house. It was the last time that I was going to go to a student’s house until I traveled again so I knew that he HAD to do something special for me.
After that we read a book about famous Pennsylvanians.
I absolutely loved it so I asked him if we could research my favorite character, Gifford Pinchot. He was actually Pennsylvania Governor 2 TIMES and he tried as hard as he could to cut government spending. Some times he did not even take his salary! He made a huge impact in PA. I’m glad I got to learn about him.

Hi! Wally here this is about my experience with a friend. She and I went to the Franklin institute. It was so much fun. I even got to go on a plane [not a real one at least.] Did you know that the Franklin institute was dedicated to Ben Franklin? Well if you didn’t he invented a lot of things.

For example the Franklin stove. He also convinced France to help America defeat England. And if France didn’t help then every day we would be saying the pledge of allegiance to England! He also signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

He also created the first college in P.A! And the reason why Ben Franklin is important to P.A is because he was born in P.A! Now here is a question about Ben Franklin. Who was a great inventor from your state?

I went home with a friend on the 27th and the 28th of December. We took a friend to Philly by train, and on the train I saw the Philly landscape there was a church, which meant the settlers, brought different religions with them. When we got to the train station, we had to walk in the cold! We walked past the building where George Washington lived when he was president. He was the first president and Philadelphia was the first capital! Then we got to our destination. Which was the first Mint in the US! We watched money being made. She told me that this was a coin factory and that there are only two money making factories in the US that are open to the public. They used to pay people with bits of silver and every state had different money. Until a person named Alexander Hamilton said. “We are one country, we should have one currency instead of different”. Now we have big factories which make one kind of money.We also went to Ben Franklin's grave.

What would have happened if the U.S. had not changed our money and every state had a different currency?

Snow In Pennsylvania

On 1/8/10 I went home with a friend. We went snow boarding. This taught me that Pennsylvania can get snow.
Who cares? How does what I learned matter to Pennsylvania? Well people pay money to go to vacation houses when it snows. They eat there, go sledding, skiing and snowboarding. That’s even more money that people spend.
In the summer time it’s very warm, but in the wintertime it’s very cold and it snows a lot. We’ve had snow days and delays. Climate really affects our lives.

My Experience on December 20,2009

Hey kids, I’m here again to teach you something else about Pennsylvania. On December 20,2009,I went home with a friend. I knew she was going to teach me something about Pennsylvania! In the morning, we played in the snow. The snow is even higher than me! She told me that the snow was about 5 inches and the snow is an enormous storm.
In the afternoon, she brought me to a birthday party. At the birthday party, I watched her playing Wii. We watched a movie. We also ate pizza; chips, soft pretzels and we drank Coke and Orange juice. she told me that the pretzels were first in southern Europe in 610 A.D. The German, Austrian and Swiss settlers brought the soft pretzels. The first commercial pretzel bakery was founded in Pennsylvania. I learned a lot about pretzels. It was really fun. Bye! Hey kids! Today, 1/7/10, I went home with my friend. It was his birthday so his parents and his sisters and I went to get Sushi.

After the sushi we went to Maggie Moos for ice cream. I learned that Pennsylvania has lots of dairy farms. We can make milk, butter, cheese and my favorite ICE CREAM! Our state beverage is milk. We ship those products to other places through the Delaware River.

I had a great time. Before bedtime we listened to Will Smith's hit single just the two of us. Will Smith Is my new role model! I had so much fun!!

Hey! What’s up? Wanna know what I did on December 29? I went home with a friend .We went to Betsy Ross’ house and saw Samuel Nichols. I got a picture with him. We also went to East End Salon, which is made up of houses from the 18 century. One of the buildings was Betsy Ross’ bedroom! I got to sit by the fire there. I wish she could tell me a story. Her birthday party was soon, so we got stamps for the invitations at the Benjamin Franklin post office.

I learned what post offices looked like in the 1700’s. Betsy Ross is a famous Pennsylvanian who may have made the first American flag! Awesome…. Samuel Nichols said that no matter if an American flag has 13 stars, or 50 stars it is still an American flag.

What I learned matters to Pennsylvania, the USA, and the world because without a post office people couldn’t send letters, and if there was something really important of serious going on, they couldn’t notify some one far away. Benjamin Franklin needed to send important letters to important people far away to help this country.

Well, that’s what I did on December 29. But before you’re done reading, I want to ask you a question.

Wally Learns About Pennsylvania's Climate

On the 23rd and 24th of December I went home with Eva. I walked home with Eva and her friends. When we got back I listened to Eva's ipod.
We went sledding on the way to her house. I never knew that people went sledding in this town. When we got to Eva’s house we had Hershey’s hot chocolate. Eva’s Dad told me something about chocolate.. “People use to have chocolate for medicine!" Isn’t that funny! After hot chocolate we went sledding again at Short Ridge Park. The snow was packed down a lot so we went really fast!

Eva told me that it had snowed just early that weekend. Eva also told me that the climate here in Pennsylvania is very unusual. In the summer it’s really warm and in the winter it’s really cold. How does the climate where you live affect your state? Here the warm weather makes people have beach houses and the cold winter makes people have ski houses.

Then we got back and played in the snow.
With these 2 furry things called dogs. They were really nice but we had to be careful because, one of the dogs, Toby, was younger and I could possible get eaten. The other dog, Buster, was chasing after a little green ball. He was always loosing the ball in the snow! His nose would get all white and Eva called him “Buster the White Nosed Reindeer”! I thought it was really funny. We made a snowman and had a snowball fight!

That night we also went caroling. It was really fun. If you don’t know already I’m a very good musician. I play the recorder and I like to sing. So, caroling practiced my singing. I also learned a lot of Christmas songs. My favorite one was Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Probably because of Buster.

The next day I had a fun time except it had nothing to do with Pennsylvania. We just had fun! Eva told me I am a great playmate. Overall, I had a GREAT time at Eva’s house. I also learned a lot.

Our class has been working very, very, very hard on our project lately. We have been learning to work with our groups and have been trying to finish our wiki so we can get a woolly mammoth. I wonder…. is the woolly a parent or kid, mother or father, girl or boy, nice or mean, fun or boring? How is the Wisconsin team getting along? Are they working in groups too? What happened to the New York team? I have a sundry of questions! But I really do think that the mammoth might like living here. One reason is because p.a. has a lot of firsts including the first zoo and the first capital! Also PA has a lot of amazing cities, geography, history and so much more! I really can’t wait to meet the mammoth because I want him/her not to be scared when they first come.

This weekend I took home our woolly mammoth, Wally, so he would not be lonely at school. This is the first weekend Wally went home with one of us. Wally and I did a lot of stuff over the weekend. On Saturday, I invited a friend over and all of us (Wally, my friend, my mom, and I) went to one of the Carvel Ice Cream Shops. On the same day, my dad and I rode on our bikes to the nearest park. You can find tadpoles in the water and you can climb on most of the rocks without getting your socks and shoes wet. The next day I went ice skating and brought Wally on the ice. In the picture, I am doing the lunge while holding him. Later, we stayed inside eating pizza while watching a HALE storm. A HALE STORM at the end of March! It does not go by the saying ‘’In like a lion out like a lamb.” That is how I spent my weekend with Wally
