San Antonio Custom and Celebration

Easter recently happened and Wally got to experience a "cascarone" being broken on his head. Cascarones are empty egg shells filled with confetti. Cascarones originally came from Asia and were filled with perfumed powder. The eggs were used to bring good luck when broken upon someone's head. The cascarones were then brought to Italy by Marco Polo. The cascarone eventually made it's way to Spain and then Mexico by the Emperor Maximillan's wife. The cascarones were then filled with confetti instead of powder. In San Antonio, cascarones are used during Easter and when "Fiesta" week is celebrated. "Fiesta" is a huge 11 day festival celebration. It is a way to honor the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto. Wally got a cascarone broken on his head while wearing his Fiesta hat. What kind of customs or celebrations do you have in your state or country?

  1. We actually get a week off school for Easter - yippee!
We love Easter here - lots of chocolate & no school.
We actually have a big festival in Gladstone over the Easter break. It's called the Harbour Festival. There is a big yacht race that starts on Good Friday from Brisbane (the capital of Queensland) and the yachts sail up to Gladstone. It is about a 6 & 1/2 hour drive but it takes the yachts a couple of days.
During the Harbour Festival there is a street parade, lots of rides and stalls, special events (like dog shows, marathon runs, talent quests etc) and a Festival Queen & Ambassador is chosen. It's a great time in Gladstone

  2. That's so cool! In PA down in Philadelphia we have the Mummers parade for New Years day. There they put on all these fancy costumes and play New Years music. They parade all down Broad Street all the way to City Hall. It is a great parade and like 50,000 people go.

  3. Nobody celebrates the 4th of July like Philadelphia! We celebrate big because this is where the Declaration of Independence was signed! It is a week long event with many firework shows and activities. It's so much fun!
