Mike Artell Visits DFW

I got to sit with the class teddy bear, Peek-A-Boo and watch as Mike Artell, author of Petite Rouge and 3 Little Cajun Pigs taught us about the Cajun culture, Mardis Gras, how to draw, and King Cake.

  1. It sounds like Wally is having a great time in North Carolina! What is the weather like don there? The temperatures here are around 30 degrees and it's supposed to get colder! I'm sure you know by know, Wally loves to learn about other states. Can you tell us what Wally has learned about North Carolina? How different is it from Pennsylvania? We're curious to hear all about Wally's adventures in North Carolina!
    -The folks from PA ;)

  2. hi all, my name is Jordi Quintal and live in the state of Mexico in my country there are several types of animals like jaguars and Mexican wolves, also as in the united states of america we Aguilar and shows our national emblem which is a eagle devouring a snake on a cactus.

Our national emblem has many years of history because that was the signal indicating the old inhabitants of Aztlan place where they founded the great city of Tenochtitlan, which was the center of the Aztec culture.

This shield is in my national flag.

Did you know that Mexico means "the navel of the moon" in the Nahuatl dialect?

what does mean the name of your state or country?

I hope you can come to Mexico to show the great country we are

  4. North Carlina is divided into 3 sections. In the west we have the Appalachian Mountains with the Blue Ridge Parkway. These mountains are very "green" unlike the Rocky mountains in the western part of the country. The leaves change colors in the fall and it is beautiful! In the middle of our state we have the Piedmont area. Our major cities (Raleigh and Charlotte) are int he Piedmont region. We live on the eastern side of the state in the Coastal Plain region on North Carolina. We don't get much snow here because of the warm sea breezes and above freezing temperatures. North Carolina is also the home of the Lost Colony. A group of settlers attempted to establish a colony at Ronoake and mysteriously disappeared!

  6. Wow! That song was really cool! I really enjoyed it! :)
When an author comes to my school they just tell us how they make the books. But, they defiantly don't sing songs! I think the songs would make kids get more involved. So, I think authors should sing songs.
P.S What was the main idea in that song?

  7. Pennsylvania has a piedmont region, too, just like North Carolina. Piedmont means land at the foot of the mountains so it makes sense that both states have a piedmont region since the Appalachian mountains run through 13 different states including PA and NC. Our piedmont region has extremely rich soil and is filled with farms! Is your region like that, too?

Our Piedmont region does have fertile farmland:) I wonder if it because of the runoff from the mountain regions or if it is because there is not a lot of soil erosion due to hilly areas...
