Wally Arrived in NC!

Wally arrived in Edenton, NC yesterday, but it was a teacher workday. Mrs. Bond decided to give him a tour of Edenton. Edenton is a very historic town. Mrs. Bond took Wally to the Barker House where the historic Edenton Tea Party occurred. Wally took a picture on the cannon used by the Edenton Bell Battery...

the cannon was made from the bells that were taken from various buildings in Edenton and then melted down to construct the cannon. Wally will be attending Mrs. Bond's 5th grade class and we are looking forward to some exciting events, including a visit from an author!

  2. Mr. Murrill's class in Roanoke, Va. have some questions for you!
Who won the battle at Edenton?
Was the cannon made out of any other material?
What year was the cannon built?
What other battles were fought in Edenton?
Why did they use bells to make the cannon?
Why did they have the tea party?
what army was the cannon used for?

Thanks for helping us learn more about Edenton!

  3. Our state is historic too. For example, Ben Franklin lived in Philadelphia for most of his life. He wasn't born in PA though, he was born in MA. Valley Forge is another historic place near us. It is the place where soldiers were trained for the American Revolution. What places are historic in your state and why?
P.S. When you get Wally please dress him. He's in incognito and wants to blend in with you all.

  4. The Edenton Bell Battery was initially organized as the Albemarle Artillery in March, 1862 by Edenton lawyer Captain William Badham, Jr. and his brother-in-law Lieutenant John M. Jones. Lieutenant Nelson McClees and his men from Tyrrell County joined the battery, as did men from Washington County. A few from Bertie and Perquimans Counties joined as well. The unit was officially incorporated into Confederate service as Company B, 3rd Battalion, North Carolina Light Artillery. After drilling in Edenton, Raleigh, and Richmond without cannon and after a threat to be disbanded and incorporated into the infantry, Captain Badham dispatched Lieutenant Jones back to Edenton in April, 1862, to solicit metal to cast cannon for the unit. Jones was successful in convincing the major institutions and residents of the town to donate their bells. Upon Jones' return to Richmond, Tredegar Foundry cast four bronze cannon on April 28, 1862, using the metal obtained from the melted bells of Edenton. The unit's name then became the Edenton Bell Battery.

  5. The Edenton Tea Party was one of the earliest organized women’s political actions in United States history. On October 25, 1774, Mrs. Penelope Barker organized, at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth King, fifty-one women in Edenton, North Carolina. Together they formed an alliance wholeheartedly supporting the American cause against “taxation without representation.”
